Dispatch field notes
Audio Lit: A Starter List
This is a provisional list, not a canon. Not every work below is audio-native in the strictest sense. Together they demonstrate what happens when voice, language, performance, silence, music and recorded sound become part of literary composition.
Where Dispatch sits
Dispatch is a series of short literary transmissions from the American West. Each piece is written for a single voice and composed with environmental sound, silence and an implied world. It belongs somewhere between the short story, the dramatic monologue and the late-night radio transmission.
Audio-native short fiction
Imaginary Advice
Ross Sutherland describes it as writing created specifically for the podcast: short stories, monologues, essays and combinations of the three. Its formal experimentation makes it a close relative of Dispatch.
The literary sound essay
The Memory Palace
Brief, single-voice historical narratives shaped by language, pacing, music and emotional association rather than conventional reporting. It is nonfiction, but unmistakably literary and made for the ear.
Epistolary or found-audio fiction
Within the Wires
Stories delivered through fictional artifacts—relaxation tapes, museum guides, letters and official recordings. The recording is not merely the delivery system; it is the fictional object itself.
Audio autofiction
The Shadows
Kaitlin Prest builds a fictional relationship story from autobiographical material, naturalistic performances, diary fragments and recordings from life. It occupies approximately the same territory autofiction occupies in print.
Improvised literary fiction
Everything Is Alive
Unscripted interviews with inanimate objects. Its method is improvisational, but the governing conceit produces character, interiority, humor and often considerable pathos.
Literary collage or audio journal
The Paris Review Podcast
Fiction, essays, poetry, archival voices, music, performance and sound design assembled as an issue-like listening experience. Some material begins on the page, so this is partly literature in audio, but its production demonstrates how a literary journal can become an audio form.
Experimental narrative and sound composition
Constellations
Work deliberately dissolving the borders among documentary, fiction, soundscape, music and sound art. This is the abstract or avant-garde edge of audio lit.
Audio miniature
Audio Flux
Three-minute works ranging from fiction and monologue to documentary and sound art. It supplies a useful precedent for audio literature as a small, complete form rather than a shortened podcast episode.
Poetry shaped as a listening experience
Poetry Unbound
The poem originates on the page, but voice, musical atmosphere, repetition and close attention turn each installment into a contemplative audio object.
